Messi celebrates his goal

Lionel Messi scored his 400th La Liga goal as Barcelona beat Eibar at the Nou Camp to regain their five-point lead at the top of the table.

Messi, the all-time leading scorer in the Spanish top flight, finished into the bottom corner for Barca’s second.

The landmark goal comes in the Argentine’s 435th league game.

Luis Suarez earlier put Barca in front by finishing a fine team move before tucking in his side’s third in the second half.

Messi, who becomes the first player to score 400 goals in just one of Europe’s top five leagues, could have scored a second but he shot straight at Eibar goalkeeper Asier Riesgo from the edge of the box.

The victory takes Barcelona five points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid are 13 points behind in fifth but the European champions will move into the top four with victory over Real Betis later on Sunday (kick-off 19:45 GMT).

BBC reports that Messi was quiet for much of the game with his goal coming from his first shot.

The 31-year-old is the second player to score 400 goals across Europe’s top five leagues, following Cristiano Ronaldo whose 409 league goals in 507 games have been scored in England, Spain and Italy.

The goal against Eibar means Messi has reached 400 goals 63 games quicker than Ronaldo reached the same milestone.

It also extends his lead as La Liga’s all-time leading record scorer with Juventus’ Ronaldo second having scored 311 goals in 292 games at Real Madrid and Telmo Zarra, who scored 251 La Liga goals third.

Bayern Wants Move for Coutinho

Published

The future of Barcelona midfielder, Philippe Coutinho, this summer might still be far from Camp Nou. After reports of failed return to Premier League, latest rumors now linking the Brazilian with Bundesliga giant, Bayern Munich.

Bayern are still looking to improve their squad, especially after failing to bid for Manchester City’s Leroy Sane. The winger’s recent long term injury is forcing Niko Kovac’s side to change their transfer plan for this upcoming new season.

One of the players who Die Roten are keen on getting are Coutinho as Barca are keen on moving him. Moreover, if the ex-Liverpool man is available on loan, Kovac’s side will be much more interested.

The Brazilian’s inconsistent display during his time with Barcelona seems to be putting off some teams so far. Especially since the Catalan side are asking a pretty big money for potential transfer.

However, having the chance to see how the midfielder go with their team for at least a season is triggering Bayern’s attention. If Coutinho is able to produce the kind of impact FC Hollywood are asking, he will be bought next season.

The Bavarian side are not scared to spent money, but only if they are sure they’re getting players they really like. They were more than willing to spent huge sum for Sane before he got an ACL injury last weekend.

Gernot Rohr, Super Eagles coach, has dropped Kelechi Iheanacho, Leicester City forward, and Rotterdam’s Semi Ajayi from the 23-man final squad for the 2019 African Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt.

Ihenacho, who had a tough season with less of play time during the English Premier League season, was dropped due to “lack of fitness”.

In the last season, he came on for Leicester city as a substitute 21 times, started four times in the EFL cup and scored just one goal.

He featured just once for The Foxes in the 2018/19 FA Cup.

Ajayi, who had a splendid season with his championship side, also failed to scale the talents in the defence.

Rohr unveiled his squad after the team’s friendly 0-0 match against Zimbabwe on Saturday.

FC Midtjyland’s Paul Onuachu and Victor Osimhen of Royal Charleroi, Belgium, are the new call ups in the Super Eagles.

The team will depart for Egypt on Sunday aboard a chartered aircraft to set up a final training camp in the city of Ismailia.

The Eagles will take on Africa’s “number one” team, Senegal, in their final pre-AFCON friendly on June 16.

Nigeria will confront Burundi, Guinea and Madagascar in Group B of the 32nd continental tournament taking place in four Egyptian cities between June 21 and July 19.

Below is Rohr’s 23-man list for 2019 Afcon

Goalkeepers: Francis Uzoho (Anorthosis Famagusta, Cyprus); Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Katsina United); Daniel Akpeyi (Kaizer Chiefs, South Africa)
